Bringing your dog to a picnic

Share Article

As summer nears and the days get warmer, we’re more inclined than ever to spend weekends outdoors. And what better way to enjoy some sun than heading out for a picnic? Friends, a bit of nature, and your furry pal by your side – what’s not to love? Here’s what you need to prepare.

Pick a dog-friendly spot

The first thing you’ll want to do when bringing a furry friend along is pick a suitable location. A spacious park or green area can be the perfect place to chill with your pooch – or you may get invited to a friend’s garden instead. Whatever the plan, check if dogs are allowed and be prepared to keep your pet on a lead (or tethered to a tree) if the situation calls for it. Ideally, your dog will be free to roam off lead and play with fellow canines, but it’s always best to pack your longest leash just in case.

Pack these in your bag

With all the food and snacks laid out within easy reach, even the most saint-like dog may be tempted to steal a bite. That’s why packing your bag with plenty of dog treats is essential. Apples, bananas and blueberries make great snacks for dogs – and for low-calorie options, try carrot sticks and broccoli florets. Make sure your pup doesn’t ingest any toxic foods or plants, though, such as chicken bones, grapes, chocolate or onions, and keep them hydrated with a bowl of fresh water.

Bringing along their favourite blanket is a bonus (familiar smells always help). Last but not least: packing poo bags is key. We like compostable or biodegradable options best.

Show them around first

If the word ‘out’ is enough to send your pooch into a frenzy of excitement, start with a walk around the area as soon as you arrive so they can let off steam and gradually take in the new smells, sights and people. An exercised pet will also be less tempted to bark, dig, and just generally get into mischief. Once you’ve explored the area together, you’ll both be ready to settle down and relax with the rest of your party.

Keep your dog comfortable

Keep your dog happy and entertained throughout the day by bringing along a few throw-and-fetch toys. This is where a KONG Classic toy comes in very handy, especially when you’ve stuffed it with treats, liver paste or just plain peanut butter. It’ll keep your dog happily occupied for longer.

On days when it’s particularly hot, try popping your KONG it in the freezer a few hours beforehand for a long-lasting, refreshing treat (we also stock pet cooling products, including toys). While you’re setting up, choose a spot that is well-shaded – that way, your dog’s ears and nose stay protected from the sun (and yours, at that!).

With a bit of planning (and a few well-timed treats), there’s no reason your dog can’t be the perfect picnic companion. Plan ahead, pack smart, and you’ll both get more out of your sunny day. No need to leave your furry friend behind.
