1. Rehoming saves lives
By adopting a dog from a dog shelter or rescue centre, you’re not only giving them the loving home they’ve been waiting for (sometimes for years) but also opening up a space for another dog looking for a pet parent. Shelters are overflowing with animals arriving quicker than they can leave, so adoption helps contribute to the care of more animals, preventing overpopulation.
2. Adopting is much cheaper than buying
From rescue puppies to older dogs, there aren’t as many upfront costs to pay when you rehome a dog. Dog shelters often make sure your new buddy is healthy, up to date with their vaccinations and microchipped – possibly also neutered, depending on their age. They may even put together a ‘bringing your rescue dog home’ welcome pack for you with dog food, poo bags, and the odd dog toy or two.
3. Adopting means getting to know your dog
One huge advantage of dog rehoming is the opportunity to spend some time with a variety of dogs to help make your decision. Before committing to a particular pooch, you can:
- Find out what size or breed dog is for you, your family and your lifestyle.
- Understand any potential challenges or extra TLC they may need.
- Discover if they’re house-trained or good with children and other pets.
Alternatively, you could foster a dog while the rescue looks for a permanent home for them. Not only can this be rewarding for you, but it will help the rescue dog get used to a home environment and relieve the pressure on a shelter that may have reached its capacity.
4. Adopting from breed-specific rescues is possible
If you already have your heart set on a particular breed, there are specific rescue charities that you can contact, whether you’re looking for a Labrador senior dog or a dachshund puppy. Another great perk of adopting from an animal shelter or rescue is they can give you lots of support and advice on anything, from training to behaviour, for as long as you need.
5. Rehoming a dog can change your life
You may save a rescue dog’s life when you offer them a forever home, but they could be saving your life, too. Having a pet changes your perspective on life: suddenly, you have a furry friend to look after and spoil, a friend who will love you unconditionally and help you live a more active lifestyle, be more present and even take time and smell the roses. After all, isn’t that the best gift someone could give to you?
